5 out of 5 stars A wonderful adventure, but SO not Steampunk   June 15, 2010
Emilie P. Bush
I keyword searched STEAMPUNK in the Kindle store, and sorted by average customer review. A Clamor in Heaven was near the top. So I got the free sample. The fact that it's totally NOT Steampunk didn't mean I wasn't hooked. The writing has the wickedly funny and delicious style not unlike the yarns of Terry Pratchet, and the wonderfully complex theology and worldbuilding of Stephen Hunt and Jay Lake.
I tried to pasre it out, to enjoy the story for as long as possible, but devoured the last half. I'm hungry for more!
I will say that the Kindle version of this book is loaded with errors, either coversion or typos, but it did not derail my enjoyment of this book.
Now, if Steampunk is what you want: Try mine - Chenda and the Airship Brofman (a Steampunk Novel)

4 out of 5 stars an exciting adventure story   May 3, 2010

a clamor in heaven is the type of book i miss seeing, a well imagined adventure in a surprising setting. the world of clamor has recognizable tropes, an alternate earth where corporations have become proxy governments, magic has become commonplace, and technology is so hyper that it really could be magic. however, what sets this book apart is the story. the author manages to bring you through the world with fresh eyes and enthusiasm that will tickle seasoned genre readers (which i am). think of an adventure in the vein of gibson, simak, or terry pratchett.

at the heart of the book is the beginning of a grand scale adventure, the story introduces us to a cast of bizarre charicatures like the hero, a naive and mysteriously gifted dunderhead, his partner, a tough sullen soldier, an unhinged ninja girl. however, the real surprise is the depth these characters, you find yourself invested in the weird cast and enjoying their personalities and interactions. a clamor in heaven is the first book in a series so it concerns itself primarily with telling the story of what brings these characters together and how they ultimately decide to face the world shaking challenges ahead of them. as the first act of an adventure it has everything you need, compelling characters, exciting set pieces, action, humor, and the anticipation of more story to come.

4 out of 5 stars Brave new world that has such people in it   April 28, 2010

I'm not sure whether to characterize this book as fantasy or cyberpunk. It has elements of both, e.g. magic, mercenaries, supernatural creatures, corporate espionage with ninjas, etc. The setting is near-future on an alternate earth that is not so much dystopian as overcrowded, with the fantastical and unexplainable encroaching on the mundane.

The setting is so colorful it's almost its own character, narrated with an affectionate wit that regards American cyberpunk the way Terry Pratchett's Discworld regards English fantasy. The characters are all funny and likable, if occasionally psychotic (and let face it, even more so then). This looks to be the first installment of a planned series and I'm very much looking forward to further adventures.

5 out of 5 stars A great light-hearted adventure   April 26, 2010

This was a really fun book to read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Right from the beginning it draws you in with the witty and humorous writing and then keeps you interested throughout with an engaging plot and vivid, memorable characters that all have dynamic personalities. The pacing was great and the way the story flowed left an element of suspense and mystery throughout the novel that kept me turning the page. I loved the universe the author created because it was so well-developed: it was vivid, humorous, and just a little bit cynical, and I had a lot of fun getting lost in it. All in all just a great, laid-back read if you are looking for a wacky adventure with lovable, wacky characters.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginning to a series   April 24, 2010

The first installment in an up-coming series, this novel has a great
sense of pacing, a good eye for detail, a keen sense of humor, and
a set of enjoyable characters, many of whom are well-thought-out
and dynamic. I enjoyed the digs at our culture and found
the vision of the future to be cynical but believable. An excellent read.
